So Many Choices, beaches that is..

Beach Bliss

It’s Mark’s fault. Mark is an old buddy from Antigua. We go wayyy back.  He and lovely Robin had a magical trip to Anguilla last June. They are there now as we speak and it’s all their fault. They enticed me with their stories about food and wine and dining and fun. I needed a break so Maggie and I decided it was time for a new island experience.  Having been up and down the Caribbean, Anguilla was one of the few islands I had yet to see. Now, being a travel agent I am rather picking, I mean discerning about where I stay. I don’t like tacky tourism, I like small and intimate and I prefer low key. Mark recommended Meade’s Bay. Take a look and tell me, is this perfection or what? Long strands of white powder sand and glistening blue seas….ahhhhhhhhhh…. This is a small island but the beaches are simply sublime.  Mark and Robin Skyped me a few times this week chatting up about Junks Hole and a few other places.  What, there’s more beaches to see? Does this island GET any better?

I live on a Dutch Caribbean island. It’s quite a different experience, let me tell you. There are positives and of course negatives but for me, a former resident of Antigua, man I miss the British West Indies and Anguilla reminded me so very much of this. Besides, in Bonaire we really have no beaches. Being in AXA made me realize what I am missing.

A few other dreamy beaches I saw were Maunday Bay, the home of Cap Jaluca. Shoal Bay East over by Gwens was windy and wonderful. Rendezvous Bay (see my cover photo of me rejoicing with arms out) home of Dune Preserve and Smokeys is surreal. Ahhh..such choices…

I am planning my next escape soon and will report back. It’s an addictive island. It calls your name and beckons you back as soon as you ferry away…it’s my bliss..my Anguilla bliss.

Roti Mi Lub

May 22, 2009

Mi Lub Mi Roti..oh, sorry, got lost in a little dialect from my former days living in Antigua. What I am trying to say is I love my roti. Roti is most easily described as a flakey burrito filled with curry and meats. I first had a Trinidadian style Roti in Antigua in the late 80′s. A Trini lady who lived near Fort James taught me how to make roti (the dough) using a tawa, a thin griddle. Ghee is essential and a lot of hand labour. She filled her curry with lovely chicken. It was beyond delicious. Whenever we are “home” visiting family, Maggie and I stop at Roti King on St. Mary’s for a lovely chicken Roti.
When we arrived in Anguilla we already knew one of our must do’s was roti at Smokey’s. My foodie friend Mark spoke accolades about this seaside spot. Maggie and I arrived on afternoon to a spartan wooden structure on a white power sandy beach. The place was filled with locals and a few tourists. The music was pumping and the vibe very cool. A man was in back hacking away at massive amounts of ribs. We placed our order and enjoyed a Ting for Maggie and a rum punch for me. By now I was making my way around the island loving the various rum punches. Smokey’s was pretty darn good. The roti came. Ambrosial for sure but let me allow the photo to reveal the truth of my words. Sat. Musical Brothers play lunchtime so make Smokey’s a stop when next you travel to Anguilla.

Dune Preserve

Dune Preserve

Dune Preserve is perhaps the hippest spot on the lovely island of Anguilla. The creation of rasta man musician, Bankie Banx, this 2 acre oceanfront location is the place to be on any given Sunday in Anguilla. The property features a mishmash of boats, bars and decking laid out in a juxtapose fashion on one of the most magnificent Caribbean beaches, Rendezvous Bay. We arrived one Sunday around 3 PM to a mix of locals and tourists all swaying to the sound of some local jazz. The bar served us up some cold Ting, my favorite soda. We hung out amongst Rastas smoking some fragrant herbs and families dining on sumptutous BBQ.  The smells coming from Dale Carty’s kitchen tantalized us enough to prompt us to find a seat in a tree house like structure and dine on grilled lobster and lovely salads. Stray cats tackled out lobster tentacles and scraps. I hope Bankie has a sterlization program in place.  A lovely local named Bush joined my daughter and I as we dined on our lunch. He shared stories of his life living in paradise.  We ended the day walking the beach enjoying the chill vibe.

Bankie hosts Moonsplash, a musical extravaganza each March around the full moon. I hope to attend in ’10.  Dune is my fav island chill on AXA.
