One night (or more if you are lucky) in French St. Martin

Some folks heading to Anguilla or coming back are needing a one or more night stay in Sint Maarten (SXM). It’s actually a cool way to enjoy your Anguilla trip experiencing either a Dutch or French island. What a cool notion to see 3 countries?  We chose the French side and wanted chic and hip Grande Case. It was easy finding a small boutique hotel called what else, Le Petit Hotel. We LOVED it. It was an interesting taxi ride from SXM thru the busy, built up neon Dutch district outside the airport. I had not been on SXM in many years and was startled by the changes.   I truly love the French Caribbean and since I live in a Dutch island, I did want a change.

We arrived at Le Petit Hotel and were welcomed by the resident manager. Our room on the top floor was a bit of a climb but the exercise is most welcome as later we would be dining well on French treats. Our hotel room was modern and large. The bedding was crisp cotton linens with fluffy duvets and pillows. The furnishings were modern and chic. There was a kitchenette with stocked goodies such as cookies and teas. Our balcony had a view of the lovely beach and Anguilla, our next stop. The bathroom was lovely with French apothocaries, thick thirsty robes and towels and a powerful shower.   We walked 15 min. to the central area for dinner. We passed an amazing Lolo (BBQ) . Next time we will stop here. Lolo’s are very popular serving grilled lobsters, meats and chicken. The place was packed. Our choice did not turn out so well. I prefer not to mention the place as the service was abysmal and they served Parrotfish, a MAJOR eco no on.  We enjoyed walking along the streets checking out the many chic boutiques and the charming buildings.   That night we slept well in our comfy bed. In the morning we woke to the smell of fresh coffee brewing. Downstairs the staff had set up a self serve breakfast complete with chocolate, almond and plain fresh croissants. The coffee was hot and smelled great. We chose fresh squeezed orange juice and hot tea. There were other delicious pastries.   I explored some shops and went to a pharmacy to fill up on some French products that cost a fortune in the US.  I love the Phyto Plage hair products.  We decided to take the public bus to Marigot. It stopped in front of our hotel and was super cheap taking us to the center of Marigot. We dragged our roller bags around and shopped. One boutique was too good to pass up. We found a lovely prom dress for my daughter. It was bright fuschia and was stunning. Later I got my hair cut from a lovely French lady. We had a delicious lunch at Le Source and then took off to the ferry port. It was the perfect way to start out trip to Anguilla. I highly recommend Le Petit Hotel for your getaway in French St. Martin.

I’m planning an Anguilla trip for March 2010 and have just fallen in love with your blog. Thanks for all the useful information! We are planning on doing exactly what you mentioned and spending one night in St. Maarten. Marigot sounds pretty, but we’re Starwood members and might try staying at The Westin.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks again for all the information.

My big project right now is trying to round up enough activities for our 8 year old daughter. She loves to swim so I don’t think it will be that difficult, but I also heard there was some sort of sailing camp and am anxious to learn more about that. Then again, some of the hotels have kids’ programs so that should help as well.

    Hi Ann,
Just dropping by to say how much I enjoyed your blog – it has really sold me on the idea of adding Anguilla to the front end of my annual escape to St. Kitts & Nevis. Especially now as there are deals to be had. And I love the idea of overnight in SXM, with a healthy dose of shopping thrown in.
    Thanks for the inspiration!
