Viceroy – 47 days but who’s counting?

May 8, 2010

Looking towards Viceroy mid construction

I am in the midst of planning my 4th trip to Anguilla. Mind you my first trip was in 08 and last year I made two treks to my favorite island. This June I was ready to book Turtle’s Nest, a large condo property on my fav beach, Mead’s Bay but I switched gears and decided to splurge a little booking at  Viceroy Anguilla. I saw the property being constructed the past two years so am anxious to see what the final results are. From all accounts the 35 acre property is magical. Kelly Wearstler designed the rooms and from the website images it looks stellar.  I am excited to experience the 3200 feet of beach.  Look for photos and a trip report end of June.  Meanwhile check out their website:

Waves

Mead's Bay by EllenLV

Anguilla has been experiencing some wave action this winter. Whenever I visit (June-Aug.) Mead’s Bay is flat as flat. Waves look good for next week. My most reliable weather site for wind and waves is Windguru. Check out:

Help for Haiti

January 17, 2010

Help Haiti, that’s all that’s on my mind. I have had a Caribbean connection since 1987. I lived in Antigua, married a West Indian and lived the life in what was sometimes a third world existence. I lived without running water and plumbing. I lived in Grays Farm (Cook’s Hill), one of Antigua’s roughest neighborhoods. I saw the day to day existence of poor people and understood their resilience and determination. Later, I was part of a relief effort for Montserrat after a deadly hurricane. Next I saw the disaster caused by a dormant volcano that came to life. I realize how precious life is and how fragile many areas of the Caribbean are in reality. My family has Haitian connections. I am certain many of you do too.  My sister in law married a Haitian. My former gardener is Haitian. Haiti is part of the Caribbean community and during their darkest hour, they need our help.

Lastly a brilliant vivacious lovely young woman, Britney Gengel is missing.  I worked in the small town where Britney hails and know her family and the community. Britney along with her professors and fellow students traveled to Haiti from Lynn University to offer relief work. During the earthquake her fellow students were at the pool and escaped. Britney and others were inside Hotel Montana and up to today are missing. The hours tick away and chances of survival are slim. It is pure horror for her family. This is indeed harrowing times for too many.

Please take time to look at the many organizations that need your help.  Please during this tragic time consider donating whatever is possible, even 5.00. Anything will help. Together creating positive focus and effort sending out thoughts and prayers of hope and recovery is paramount. I believe in any miracle possible and hope you do too.

Rendezvous Rum Punch

December 12, 2009

I just got this recipe off Trip Advisor. I always am in search for a great rum punch recipe. Here’s one to try. I also use freshly grated Grenadian nutmeg and suggest you do the same. Penzie’s Spice has some if you cannot get to Grenada (grin).

Rendezvous Punch

2 cans pineapple juice 32 oz

2 cans orange juice 32 oz

1 can guava juice 32 oz

10 oz white rum

10 oz dark rum

5 oz Malibu

2oz grenadine

2 oz almond syrup or amaretto

2 oz hazelnut syrup or fringelike

20 splashes of angostura bitters

Fresh fruit

2 oranges, 2 apples, 2 limes, 2 lemons, sliced and quartered

20 red grapes, ¼ melon honey dew and cantaloupe

NO GRAPEFRUIT – WILL MAKE IT BITTER

Spice:

Dusting of nutmeg, 1 cinnamon stick

Preparation

Cut fruits add to large punch bowl

Add juices and rum

Add herbs and spice

Finally add grenadine until, dark yellow, orange colour appears, not too red, will be too sweet

Adjust alcohol content to taste

Let punch sit in cooler for 1 or 2 days for best result

Will make about 40 punches
