Cote Mer in Island Harbour

June 29, 2010

Stephen and Thomas have created an oasis in out of the way, Island Harbour. Most folks don’t meader that far but only about 5 miles from the Valley it is hardly a tough commute.  Cote Mer is close to Shoal Bay East villas, hotels and condos. It was a 20 minute enjoyable  ride from Viceroy.  Having spent years in Russia with two sets of diverse and interesting life experiences the Caribbean beckoned them to come set up a dining spot in Anguilla.

Cote Mer

Lisanne and I went on Sunday night and were greeted by Stephen, a delightful sincere host who insured the evening was nothing short of perfect. We started the night off with Ti Punches. Lisanne recommended I try  the tempura mozzarella salad. She chose the lobster pie. My app was amazing. Large slices of fresh tomato with a drizzle of truffle oil and pine nuts served as the bed for the lovely tufty pillows of tempura mozzarella. I was heaven. Lisanna loved her lobster pie.  The homemade crusty rolls were lovely with unsalted butter. Oh oh, Stephen gave us a taste of smoked Mahi Mahi (ya a sustainable fish) on a toast crust and creme fraiche.  It was amazing. I chose fish soup as an entree  and Lisanne chose the tenderloin. My soup had pernod in it..it was like bisque and delightful. Lisanne pronounced her tenderloin perfect in fact the best she has had on island.

Apple Fantasia

We had little room but were tempted by the menu.  I asked Stephen to choose for me and he recommended the Apple Fantasia with Calvados. Lisanne had the Cuban Night Chocolate Biscuit. We died and went to heaven. Stephen gave us homemade vodka with lime and ginger to digest our meal. Our 3 hour experience was nothing short of fabulous. I will be back Aug. 6 and cannot wait.

Jacala Restaurant

Grilled Watermelon Salad

My friend Lisanne and I headed over to Mead’s Bay to dine at Jacala. What is bettter  than oceanfront dining with your feet in the sand? We arrived 11:30 but were asked to wait until 12 for the restaurant to open. We sat near the sand staring into ocean blue. The setting is simple and divine. The owner Jacques was having a pre lunch swim. It is always great to see the owner enjoying life..that good vibe gets passed on to his guests. At 12 he seated us and took our drink order. We shared two bottles of Pelegrino during the meal. Lisanne and I shared the grilled watermelon and goat cheese salad. WOW…who knew you could grill watermelon. It was sublime. I had the lobster club sans bacon and the tarter sauce on the side. Lisanne had a simple burger. Everything was amazing. My sandwich was simple and fresh. We shared a pot au chocolate for dessert, a small thimble size concoction. Pure ambrosia.

Getting There is Half The Fun

May 15, 2010

Harriet Heading to her Anguilla Bliss

Half the fun of getting to Anguilla is the ferry from Sint Maarten or St. Martin. My first trip, Maggie and I were in Grande Case so it made sense to take the public ferry from Marigot. It’s an easy process buying a ticket (15.00 pp) and waiting for the next ferry. Fortunately for us it was The Link Ferry with a big open top so I could feel the breeze. Some of the ferries place the passengers in enclosed cabins (ugh). The ride over was breaktaking and the sea calm. As we came in, Maggie saw a sea turtle . What a warm welcome.

My second trip I arranged a ride on the Link Ferry. A taxi picked me up outside the arrival hall in SXM and within a minute I was at the customs house in Sint Maarten. 20 minutes later I arrived in Anguilla.  Coming back I booked a ride on the school bus ferry run by Link Ferry. Captain Franklin had a boat load of kids heading to school on the Dutch side.
My third trip I waited a while for the Link Ferry and finally gave up. The Shauna Ferry was leaving and gave me a ride. This is an enclosed boat but the captain let me sit in his seat so I could hang out his window. I was the only passenger and we flew. I was slightly green upon arrival but made it safe and sound. Within an hour I was at Smokey’s with the girls eating Roti and listening to the Musical Brothers.

What’s the best boat? It’s your call. The boat charters from the Dutch side are around 85 USd pp round trip. This works for me. If you want to take the public ferry from Marigot it is cheaper but you then have the taxi fare and traffic.

Ambia Bed and Breakfast, a Boutique Property

When I travel I tend to prefer small intimate getaways. I love boutique hotels and found a gem on Anguilla. Located in South Hill with splendid views of Sandy Ground, Ambia Bed and Breakfast was perfection. Magda the manager, met me at Blowing Point Ferry and whisked me away to my hideout. Upon arrival I met lovely Ruby the dog who lives in her garage suite. She is the sweetest dog imaginable. I walked down the stairs into a little piece of paradise. There is a divine pool and  the stunning views of Sandy Ground. The breezes were blowing and the property had ample shaded areas to read, surf the internet on the free wifi or snooze on loungers. Magda oriented me to the property. Breakfast is included and can be prepared by the staff or on your own. I chose the latter affording myself the luxury of trying lovely cheeses, local breads, fresh pastries from Geraud’s Bakery and many kinds of tea, juices and bottled water. Magda had coffee brewing daily.

My room was decorated with soft and subtle designs mostly a Japanese / Caribbean influence. The doors are large Japanese screen sliders. The bed has a posturpedic mattress, cotton sheets and comfy pillows. The shower is unique and  attractive and provides hot water for your comfort if needed. Magda provided lovely soap and bath products as well. At night the AC cooled my room allowing me to a good night sleep.

Ambia has a Vonage phone for free international calls as well as a local line. There is a tv and reading area with books as well as games. It is a cozy spot. I often had the place to myself.

Ambia is a 5 min. walk to Tasty’s for lovely local food created by Dale Carty. Sandy Ground and Elvis’s, Johnno’s, Veya, Barrel Stay and Pumphouse are 5 min. down the hill by car. Don’t miss the Pyrate Rum Factory. Anguilla boasts 33 lovely beaches. I personally have visited  over 15 and am still waiting to enjoy more.
To book Ambia contact ann@bonairecaribbean.com or call 1-800 219-0118.  As always free island Concierge services offered to all Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations guests.
